What Is IMAT and Who Runs It

The International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT) is the sole official entrance examination required for international students applying to English-taught Medicine and Surgery programs at public universities in Italy. The exam is developed and administered jointly by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing.

The exam is conducted annually, typically in mid-September. For Indian students, the great news is that you don't need to travel to Europe to take it; there is an official test center located in New Delhi.

IMAT vs NEET: Similarities and Differences

If you've spent the last two years preparing for the NEET, you are already in a strong position for the IMAT. The core scientific syllabus overlaps significantly. However, the IMAT places a heavy emphasis on critical thinking and logic.

Feature NEET (India) IMAT (Italy)
Total Questions 200 (attempt 180) 60
Duration 200 Minutes 100 Minutes
Subjects Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology Biology, Chemistry, Physics/Math, Logic, General Knowledge
Scoring +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect +1.5 for correct, -0.4 for incorrect
Difficulty Level Intense competition, rote learning heavy Concept-heavy, critical thinking focus

How to Register for IMAT from India

Registering for the IMAT requires precision, as the window is usually short. Here is the step-by-step breakdown:

  • Pre-enrollment: First, you must complete the pre-enrollment process on the official Universitaly portal. This is a mandatory step for non-EU students requiring a visa.
  • Registration Window: Registration for the IMAT itself typically opens in July or early August on the Universitaly portal.
  • Booking the Center: During registration, you will select your preferred test center. For India, this is usually New Delhi. Seats at local centers can fill up, so early registration is advised.
  • Fee Payment: The exam fee is approximately â‚Ŧ130 (around ₹11,500), payable online via credit card during the registration process.

What to Study

The 60-question IMAT is broken down into specific sections. Understanding this weighting is key to your entrance exams preparation:

The Syllabus Breakdown: Biology (18 questions), Chemistry (6 questions), Physics and Mathematics (6 questions), and a massive section for Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge (30 questions).

Your NEET preparation covers the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics perfectly. The extra preparation you need is entirely focused on the 30 questions of Logic and General Knowledge. Cambridge logic questions require practice in deductive reasoning, identifying assumptions, and text analysis.

Scoring and Cutoffs

The maximum possible score on the IMAT is 90 points (60 questions × 1.5 points). Because of the negative marking penalty (-0.4 for wrong answers), it is mathematically risky to guess blindly. Leaving a question blank results in 0 points.

What is a competitive score? It varies every year based on the exam's difficulty and the specific university you apply to. However, historical data shows that scoring between 45 to 55 points is generally highly competitive for securing a seat in prestigious public universities. Northern universities like Milan or Bologna often have higher cutoffs than southern ones.

After IMAT

Results are typically released a few weeks after the exam. Because you select your university preferences during registration, the MUR uses a centralized ranking system. If your score meets the cutoff for your first-choice university, you will be offered a seat. Once accepted, you finalize your enrollment and complete the study visa process at the Italian embassy in India, ensuring you arrive in time for the autumn semester.
