TILL / CILS — Italian Language Proficiency

Italian language proficiency tests are required for programs taught in Italian, for some visa pathways, and for daily life integration in Italy. The main certifications are CILS (Università per Stranieri di Siena) and CELI. TILL refers to university-specific Italian language assessments used in select admission pathways.

📋 Key Certifications

CILS (Certificazione di Italiano)
Official Italian language certification by University of Siena. Levels A1 through C2. Globally recognized. Required for Italian-medium programs.
CELI (Certificato di Conoscenza)
Italian certification by University of Perugia. Equivalent system to CILS. Accepted by most Italian universities and institutions.
University-Specific TILL Tests
Some Italian universities conduct their own Italian language placement tests (TILL) as part of admission for Italian-taught programs. College Avenue guides you to the right test for your specific target university.

❓ Do You Need Italian to Study in Italy?

✅ English-taught programs: No Italian required for admission. Most programs on College Arena are English-medium. You can graduate without knowing Italian.
⚠️ Italian-taught programs: Require B2-level Italian (CILS B2 / CELI 3 minimum). Worth considering if you want wider university choice or lower-cost options.
💡 Practical reality: Learning basic Italian for daily life is recommended regardless. Italy is not an English-first country outside university classrooms.

Frequently Asked Exam Questions

Is IMAT easier than NEET? +

IMAT covers similar subjects to NEET — Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math — plus Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge. If you've already been preparing for NEET, you need little to no extra preparation. The scoring and format differ but NEET prep gives you a strong head start.

Is an MBBS from Italy valid in India? +

Yes. The National Medical Commission (NMC, formerly MCI) recognizes Italian medical degrees as equivalent to MBBS. Graduates appear for the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) to practice in India — the same pathway as any foreign medical graduate.

What is the IMAT exam date in 2025–26? +

IMAT is conducted every September. Registration typically opens in July. For the most current dates and India test centre information, contact us — we track these deadlines actively and will notify enrolled students well in advance.

Do I need IELTS to study in Italy? +

For most English-taught programs at Italian public universities, no. Most universities accept proof of English-medium secondary education or conduct their own English assessment. IELTS becomes relevant if you're also considering Germany, Netherlands, or other European countries alongside Italy.

Can I give TOLC-I from India? +

Yes. TOLC-I is taken fully online from home using a proctored system. You need a computer with a webcam, stable internet, and a quiet environment. It can be taken multiple times a year, so there's no pressure to nail it on the first attempt.

What exam do I need for a general engineering degree in Italy? +

For most engineering bachelor's programs, you need TOLC-I (or TOLC-E for some engineering variants). For top private schools like Bocconi (management) or Politecnico di Milano (engineering), additional requirements like SAT or a university-specific test may apply. We match you to the right exam for your target programs.
