NMC Recognised Medical Colleges in Italy — Why This Matters
Before any Indian student commits to MBBS abroad, there is one non-negotiable: the degree must be recognised by India's National Medical Commission (NMC), formerly the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Without NMC recognition, you cannot appear for FMGE or NExT — which means you cannot legally practice medicine in India regardless of the quality of your education.
The good news for Italy: all Italian public universities offering medicine degrees through the IMAT pathway are recognised by the NMC. Italy's medical education system is regulated by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) under EU standards, which automatically qualifies graduates for the NMC screening process.
This guide lists every relevant Italian institution, with key details Indian families need before making a decision.
How to Verify NMC Recognition
The NMC maintains a list of recognised foreign medical universities at its official portal. Indian students can verify any institution before enrollment. College Avenue cross-checks all universities we recommend against the current NMC list before advising any student.
Important: NMC recognition applies to the institution and degree program. You must enroll in the specific medicine (Medicina e Chirurgia) program taught in English via IMAT. Other programs at the same university are not automatically covered.Complete List of NMC-Recognised Italian Medical Universities (IMAT Track)

What "NMC Recognised" Actually Means in Practice
NMC recognition means Indian graduates can:
1. Appear for FMGE / NExT — the qualifying examination to practice medicine in India 2. Apply for State Medical Council registration once FMGE/NExT is cleared 3. Practice medicine legally in India in any state 4. Apply for PG medical entrance (NEET-PG) for specialisation in India
It does NOT mean your degree is equivalent to an Indian MBBS for the purpose of skipping FMGE. All foreign medical graduates — regardless of country — must clear FMGE or NExT. This applies equally to graduates from Georgia, Philippines, Russia, Bangladesh, and Italy.
